Not long ago, thongs were just a novelty. Thong underwear, originally the core item of a stripper's wardrobe, was brought into the mainstream by specialty shops and mail order catalogues such as Fredericks of Hollywood in the late 80's. Today they are one of the top selling lingerie items on the market.
The glittering array of styles available is testimony to the popularity and power of the thong today. You can buy a thong in silk, satin, cotton or lace; thongs adorned with trimmings, embellished with embroidery, or bejewelled with pearl or diamante strings. There are sports thongs, leather thongs, everyday thongs, luxury thongs, stretch lace thongs, novelty thongs…every thong you can imagine.
Indeed, it is hard to find an underwear collection that does not have it's own matching thong, and we have not even touched upon the variations such as tangas, g-strings, or v-strings.
So, what is the difference between a thong and a g-string, I can hear you say.
Essentially there is very little difference. A g-string, as the name implies, has a string in the back of the panty instead of a fabric panel. A thong, on the other hand has a little more fabric around an inch in width and usually comes to a "Y" at the waistband. Worn as underwear or the bottom piece of a bikini set, initially women did not wear thongs all the time, only under particular clothes like pants or tight dresses where VPL (visible panty line) was a problem.
The odd thing about the thong or string style is that women either swear by them or loathe them, as intimate and sexy apparel the thong can have a provacative and powerful effect.
Many women want to wear something that is sexy and somewhat naughty/wicked and a matching bra and thong can have just that effect. It can and does make many women feel powerful and confident about their own sexuality.
