History of Rigby and Peller noted for their made-to-measure corsetry and lingerie

Mrs B. Rigby and Mrs G. Peller established Rigby & Peller, the British company famous for the quality of its made-to-measure corsetry and lingerie, in 1939.

From the very beginning, made of the most luxurious fabrics, its graceful lingerie was expertly fitted for customers ranging from the affluent fashionable society of the day, to international film stars and royalty.

The company was taken over by Mrs Seiden, a cousin of Mrs Peller's, in 1956, and four years later Rigby & Peller was granted the Royal Warrant as Corsetiere to HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1960, and again in 1993, to HM Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother.

Being granted a Royal Warrant of Appointment is an extraordinary honour for any business, however when June Kenton became the new proprietor of Rigby & Peller in 1980, she was astutely conscious that the company's image required a much-needed overhaul. It had an excellent reputation, but a rather old-fashioned, stuffy image, which was to change much over the following years.

In a shrewd move, designed to attract the elegant women who shopped in Knightsbridge, Rigby & Peller moved to a new and specifically designed shop, adjacent to the famous department store Harrods in London. The move proved inspirational.

The company had built its current standing on supplying handmade bras to women of every shape and size, together with its expert customer service. By the 1990s, the old-fashioned concept of being 'measured and fitted' for a bra had made a comeback, and this together with the dedicated experience of the sales staff guaranteed the company's success.

In 1988, the company launched its own ready to wear range, which included bras, basques, briefs, and suspenders, and simultaneously expanded, into the European and American markets. In 1992, the company signed a licensing agreement for the Rigby & Peller collection to be manufactured by Eveden Ltd and distributed worldwide.

Despite such growth, Rigby & Peller continues to be synonymous with personally fitted, luxurious lingerie. Its beautiful range of lingerie, expertly fitted and made from silk and satin, as well as more conventional fabrics is second to none.

Today Rigby and Peller have three shops in Knightsbridge, Conduit Street and Terminal 3 of Heathrow airport, their client list is every bit as exclusive as when they first started in 1939 including Royals from across the world, movie stars, and celebrities from the media and fashion worlds.
