Gruppo La Perla

La Perla, one of the principal fashion houses in Italy, supplies its elegantly styled, sumptuous lingerie, swimwear, and perfume throughout the world, and in some of the most esteemed department stores including Harrods in London, Saks, Neiman Marcus, and Bergdoff Goodman in New York; as well as Takishimaya and Wako in Japan, El Corte Ingles in Spain, Galeries Lafayette in France, and El Palacio de Hierro in Mexico. The company gained its reputation by designing lingerie for stylish modern women who took pleasure from the poise that La Perla's sought-after under and outerwear inspired.

The Italian designer Ada Masotti established the company in 1954. Operating from a tiny workshop in Bologna, a city famous for its highly developed textile industry, Masotti simply used top quality fabrics to create exclusive and select underwear focussing initially on corsetry. She intimately appreciated and demonstrated an uncanny anticipation of women's desires and body shape, designing a collection of lingerie that flawlessly complemented Christian Dior's "New Look", a major fashion trend of the time.

Under the direction of Dr. Alberto Masotti during the 60s and 70s, Gruppo La Perla built up a standing for lingerie that was distinguished for its beautiful and crafted style. Most items incorporated handmade lace and embroidery, fashioned and integrated into a collection that included negligees, petticoats, chemises and separates

La Perla launched its Malizia collection in the 80s, and followed this with a raunchy line under the Marvel brand. The company's success in the underwear market allowed Gruppo La Perla to diversify, and the company turned its sights
to swimwear and perfume. Marketed as La Perla Mare, its luxury swimwear, and outerwear collections carrying the label Ritmo di Perla were all made in three manufacturing factories in Bologna, of which each specialised in one line, with The La Perla fragrance being produced under license in Parma.

In cities famous for their fashionable shopping districts Gruppa La Perla, in the 90s, opened dedicated boutiques in Paris, London, New York, Venice, Barcelona, Hong Kong, and Tokyo. The success of this global marketing plan is irrefutable. By the late 1990s, the company employed more than 2,000 people, with an annual turnover in excess of $250m.
